On July 3, 1857, Cartwright bought lots 2 and 3 of block 53 in St. Cloud in Stearns County.

He lived in Wilson County, Tennessee at the time of the purchase but moved to Sumner County by 1860. His male slaves in 1860 were ages 55, 26, 18, 9, 5, 4, 2; his female slaves were ages 48, 22, 11, 6.
