On October 28 and November 26, 1861, Hill bought land in Stearns County from Cyrus P. Mendenhall. On January 7, 1862, Hill bought land in Wright County from Cyrus P. Mendenhall. With brother-in-law R. J. Mendenhall, Hill owned much of the Stevens Square neighborhood in Minneapolis. He later became president of Minnesota’s State Medical Society.
He lived in North Carolina before 1861, when he moved to Minnesota. In the 1850 slave schedule for Lenoir County, he owned one male slave, aged 20. In the 1860 schedule for Randolph County, he held a man aged 75 and a woman aged 80.
Robert: born about 1791 (see https://library.uncg.edu/slavery/petitions/details.aspx?pid=1010 ). Hill tried unsuccessfully to emancipate him in court in November 1856.
